Check digits: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and UPC-E all carry a final check digit that a scanner uses to confirm a clean read. Enter the full number (including the check digit) or use “Add check digit” and the tool will calculate it for you. CODE128, CODE39 and ITF have no check digit.

Barcode generator — frequently asked questions

Use EAN-13 for most supermarket products, EAN-8 for small items such as chewing gum, and UPC-A for products sold in North America. These formats are what retail scanners expect and each one carries its own check digit.

CODE128 encodes the full ASCII range, so it is the most flexible and compact choice for shipping labels, inventory tags and internal codes. CODE39 supports only uppercase letters, digits and a handful of symbols, but it is very easy to read and to type by hand with a basic laser scanner.

ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5) stores digits only and needs an even number of digits, otherwise the scanner cannot tell where the barcode ends. Add a leading zero if you have an odd number of digits, and note that ITF has no start or stop character of its own — it relies on surrounding quiet zones.

The generator simply encodes the value you type — it does not register anything with GS1 or issue official product codes. Retail barcodes usually need a company prefix and a valid check digit, so make sure you own the prefix you print.
